Facebook says it is removing 687 pages and accounts linked to the Congress party ahead of the Lok Sabha elections 2019. The social media giant said it is also removing 103 accounts linked to Pakistani military employees.
Ahead of the 2019 elections, the social media platform in a statement said its move was prompted due to 'coordinated inauthentic behaviour' of the concerned pages and accounts.
The tech giant said its investigation found that the 'individuals used fake accounts' and joined different groups to spread their content increase and increase engagement.
The content on these posts consisted of local news and 'criticism of political opponents such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi'. Nathaniel Gleicher, the Head of Cybersecurity Policy at the California-based tech said that the 'the individuals tried to mask their identity but the company's review of them found that it was connected to individuals associated with an INC (Indian National Congress) IT Cell.'
