New Delhi, Mar 25 : The BJP on Monday named Prakash Mishra, former CRPF chief and ex-DGP police, as the party candidate for the prestigious Cuttack parliamentary constituency in Odisha.
According to announcement made by BJP CEC secretary J P Nadda, former party MP from Balasore M A Kharbela Swain from Kandmahal.
Mr Swain had left BJP and formed a regional party of his own but returned to the party fold lately.
Fielding Mr Mishra from Cuttack will give the saffron party an edge in the constituency and the Biju Janata Dal still remains undecided over who shall be its candidate.
Mr Mishra was removed as the Odisha Police chief in July 2014 under a controversial circumstance and the BJP and the Congress had flayed the Chief Minister Patnaik for 'harassing' an honest police officer. Mr Mishra was also slapped with a vigilance case but the court had quashed the charges.
Senior BJD leader Bhartruhari Mahtab is representing Cuttack for quite sometime and there have been hints that he may be moved to Rajya Sabha and thus BJD chief Naveen Patnaik could field a
new face from the constituency.
Meanwhile, in Kandmahal there is some resentment from the local people as all three candidates Manoj Kumar Acharia (Congress), Achyuta Samanta (BJD) and Mr Swain (BJP) are all outsiders, sources said.
The BJP also has named nine more candidates for assembly elections in the state. UNI
