LS election in 7 phases from April 11 to May 19, counting on May 23; Kerala poll on April 23

Elections to the 17th Lok Sabha will start on April 11 and the polling over seven phases will get over May 19. The counting will be held on May 23.

Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora announced in New Delhi on Sunday that the poll in Kerala would be held on April 23 during the third phase of polling. The election to all the 20 seats would be on the same day.

There would be 90 crore voters this year which includes 8.4 crore new ones. There would be around 10 lakh polling stations in the country this time compared to over 9 lakh last time.

There would be pictures of the candidates in the voting machines.With the announcement of the poll schedule the code of conduct has come into effect from today.

“Special observers will be sent to States where we expect security to be an issue,” Arora said.Citizens could also complain of cash transactions during the elections, he added.

The term of the present Lok Sabha comes to a close on June 3.
