Vote for a strong regime at Centre, says Modi

Prime Minister Narendera Modi on Wednesday appealed to the people to give the National Democratic Alliance(NDA) another chance of rule for a strong regime at the Centre in preference to the Congress to which ”dynasty comes first and family first”

Addressing a mammoth public meeting in suburban Vandalur in Chennai, Modi said the NDA government of the last four and half years had a proud record. It was futuristic in its vision, comprehensive when it came to farmers welfare and fair-minded when it came to social justice. It had shown it was “strong in protecting nation’s security, uncompromising in fighting corruption and unforgiving in punishing the terrorists”.

“Our policy is India first and people first”, he claimed and said the voter should ask the Congress-led mega alliance which is the making with a one-point agenda of removing Modi from power, what plans it had for India’s development.

Apparently referring to questions raised by Congress on the 2016 surgical strikes and the more recent trans-border attack on Jaish camps by our air force in Balkot, Modi said “the Congress is not for a strong India or strong armed forces”. Modi also touched upon the release of IAF fighter pilot Abhinandan Vartahaman after his plane crashed into Pakistan side of the border.

Taking a cue from PMK leader Ramadoss who hailed him for pursuing the policy of cooperative federalism, Modi said the Congress never respected regional leaders and cited the way Indira treated Kamaraj when he opposed the emergency and how she dismissed opposition ruled governments by misusing Art 356 of the Constitution. He recalled that Indira Gandhi dismissed the MGR as well as Karunanidhi Government during her reign.

Modi termed the DMK’s alliance with the Congress as “political opportunism”. He said while the BJP respected regional aspirations, the Congress was guided by “high command and family first culture . If it was voted to power, governance would become Delhi-centric,” he said.

Modi also invoked the name of AIADMK icon MG Ramachandran whose statue he unveiled at the function. He also said when he went to Sri Lanka, he visited Kandy where MGR was born. He hailed MGR’s welfare schemes and announced the Chennai Central Station would be named after MGR.

Modi touched on another issue of concern to Tamil Nadu and said his government time and again secured the release of Tamil Nadu fishermen arrested by the Sri Lankan navy upon their straying into their waters His government had rescued even ten fishermen who were sentenced to death on drug smuggling charge.

The meeting was attended by top AIADMK leaders Edappadi K Palanisami and O Pannerselvam besides Lok Sabha Deputy Speaker M Thambidurai, and leaders of the alliance.
