President Ram Nath Kovind said on Monday that though India was for peace, its armed forces "are ready to face any situation". This comment was seen as a warning to Pakistan in the wake of military standoff between the two countries after Balakot air strikes carried out in retaliation for terrorist attack in Pulwama.
The President presented the coveted Presidential Colours to Air Force Station, Hakimpet, and 5 Base Repair Depot at the Air Force Station in Sulur near Coimbatore. He also witnessed a display by the Akash Ganga team, IAF's daredevil paratroopers who performed stunts at 10,000 ft height and landed at predetermined spots. The President also witnessed a flypast by IAF fighters and transport planes and helicopters.
Parachute jumpers demonstrated a tricolour formation while the Sarang helicopter aerobatic team and Tejas and Air Warrior also performed aerobatics.
The Sulur Air Force Station is the IAF’s only airbase to accommodate and operate fighter and transport planes as well as helicopters.
Once the defence corridor, of which Coimbatore is an integral part, comes up, the Sulur Air Force station will gain importance. Imported aircraft will be maintained at the defence park. Already 20 acres land has been identified for the DRDO project.
