Rahul flays price of Rafale Jet as “opaque”

New Delhi, Feb 13: Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday rejected the CAG report on the contentious Rafale deal that India managed to get 2.86 per cent cheaper compared to the UPA-era deal, saying the price of the fighter aircraft was "opaque".

Pointing to the CAG report tabled in the Rajya Sabha that stated that compared to the 126 aircraft deal, India managed to 2.86 per cent cheaper compared to the UPA-era deal, Mr Gandhi raised questions on several counts.

"The price calculation has been opaque. It is the first time that CAG has redacted numbers,' he told a press conference here.

He faulted the Rafale deal signed by the Narendra Modi Government saying that the last aircraft would be handed over to the Indian Government in "10 years", much later than the one nearly signed by the UPA Government and belied the claim that the Indian Air Force urgently needed the combat aircraft.

“The same note puts the benchmark price of the Rafale under the new deal at 55.6 per cent higher than the original deal,” he told reporters at a press conference.

"There were no bank, sovereign guarantees," he stressed.

Asked for his reaction to Samajwadi Party patriarch Mulayam SIngh Yadav in the Lok Sabha hoping for a second term for Prime Minister Narendra Modi, he politely said "I disagree with him. But Mulayam Singh Yadavji has a role in politics and I respect his opinion," (UNI)
