Rafale row: Jaitley dismisses Sibal’s charge against CAG Mehrishi

Agency News

New Delhi, Feb 10: Shortly after Congress leader Kapil Sibal sought to target the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (CAG) Rajiv Mehrishi with 'conflict of interest' charge vis-a-vis Rafale aircraft deal, Union Minister Arun Jaitley countered him saying even after ten years in Government former UPA ministers were feigning ignorance.

"After ten years in Government former UPA ministers still don’t know that Finance Secretary is only a designation given to the senior most secretary in the finance ministry," Mr Jaitley tweeted.

He clarified that the Secretary (Economic affairs) has no role in expenditure files of the Defence ministry.

"Defence ministry files are dealt with by Secretary (Expenditure)," Mr Jaitley pointed out in a series of tweets.

Countering Mr Sibal's contentions, Mr Jaitley, who returned from treatment abroad only on Saturday, said the - ‘Institution wreckers’ are now directing their tirade against the CAG "based on falsehood".

Earlier, former Union Minister and senior Congress leader Kapil Sibal told a AICC media briefing that Mr Meherishi was Union Finance Secretary between October 24, 2014 and August 30, 2015.

"It was between this period in April 2015, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had gone to Paris and finalised the Rafale aircraft deal with France," Mr Sibal has said. (UNI)
