New Delhi, Feb 6: The Rajya Sabha on Tuesday appreciated its former and sitting members, who have been awarded with the highest civilian awards, including Bharat Ratna and Padma Bhushan, for the services rendered in their respective fields.
Former President Pranab Mukherjee and late Nanaji Deshmukh were awarded Bharat Ratna for their distinguished service in the field of public affairs and social work, respectively.
Mr Mukherjee served as the Rajya Sabha member for three consecutive terms from 1969 to 1987 and again for two consecutive terms from 1993-2004.
While late Deshmukh was nominated member of this House from November, 1999 to November, 2005.
'It is indeed a matter of great pride for this House that four of our former and a sitting member have been chosen for the prestigious awards of the country,' Rajya Sabha Chairman Venkaiah Naidu said.
Veteran journalist late Kuldip Nayyar, Lok Sabha lawmaker from Madhubani in Bihar and Sardar Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa from Punjab were awarded with Padma Bhushan.
Late Nayyar was nominated member of this House from August, 1997 to August, 2003, while Mr Yadav served as member, from 1980 to 1986.
Sardar Dhindsa became member of this House for the first time in 1998. He was re-elected to this House in 2010 and 2016.
'On behalf of the whole House and my own behalf, I place on record our appreciation for the great services rendered by Mr Mukherjee, Mr Deshmukh, Mr Nayyar, Mr Yadav and Mr Dhindsa in their respective fields,' added the Chairman.
