New Delhi, Feb 3: BJP leaders have on Sunday lashed out at the Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and West Bengal Congress for 'obstructing' CBI do their job vis-a-vis the probe into chit fund scams in the state.
"We condemn this and today's development shows the democracy has been destroyed in West Bengal. It is utter lawlessness in Bengal," BJP in charge of West Bengal Kailash Vijayvargiya told reporters here.
He pointed out that the probe into the chit funds scams in Bengal had started long before BJP-led NDA came to power in 2014.
"Moreover, these probes are happening at the directives of the Supreme Court and it seems Mamata Banerjee does not care about even the Supreme Court or about the true spirit of the federal structure of the constitution," he said.
"There is threat to CBI officials on duty and even their family members and so I urge the centre to help these CBI officials discharge their duties and conduct the probe," he said.
"If the police commissioner Rajeev Kumar is not guilty and the state government has nothing to hide, why should the state police and the state government prevent CBI do their job," BJP MP in Rajya Sabha Vinay Sahasrabuddhe told UNI amid reports emerging from Kolkata that the local police have 'prevented' a 45-member CBI team to conduct their probe and question the police commissioner in question.
"The Trinamool action today is a case of affront on federal structure of the constitution where the state government is guilty," he said.
The BJP lawmaker also retweeted a missive which says - "Imagine, police chief of a metropolis on the run. When CBI officials reach his house, Mamata’s Kolkata police detain them. Imagine lawlessness of Bengal, desperation of Didi".
"This episode is a serious matter and needs attention," he said.
Senior BJP leader and onetime confidant of Ms Banerjee, Mukul Roy said the Chief Minister has grown panicky especially after the people's response to BJP rallies addressed among others by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh during last two days.
Another BJP leader and MP Rupa Ganguly also wondered if Rajeev Kumar is not guilty, why he is not cooperating in the prove and why the Chief Minister "is safeguarding Rajeev Kumar".
"I also don't understand why she has to praise the absconding police commissioner so much," she said.
Reports from Kolkata said CBI officers - who had gathered in front of police commissioner's house were "forcefully taken to Shakespeare Sarani police station".
Reports also claimed that the Chief Minister Ms Banerjee reached Kolkata Police Commissioner's residence.
During last few years, senior Trinamool leaders including party's floor leader in Lok Sabha Sudip Bandyopdhyay and Tapal Pal have been arrested.
Amid reports of confrontation between Kolkata police and the CBI, earlier Ms Banerjee tweeted lauding the 'missing police commissioner'.
"The Kolkata Police Commissioner is among the best in the world. His integrity, bravery and honesty are unquestioned. He is working 24x7, and was on leave for only one day recently. When you spread lies, the lies will always remain lies," she tweeted.
"The highest levels of the BJP leadership are doing the worst kind of political vendetta," the Chief Minister had alleged. (UNI)
