New Delhi, Feb 1: Finance Minister Piyush Goyal on Friday said over 12 crore farmers will be benefitted by the new measures announced in the Budget proposals presented in Parliament and maintained that the government has been able to address all sections of people.
Addressing the mandatory post-Budget press conference here, Mr Goyal said the Budget has also addressed the concerns of unorganised sector workers and the middle class.
There has been never any step taken in the past at this scale for the farmers, he said referring to the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi -- under which Rs 6,000 per hectare in a year will be deposited directly in the bank accounts of small and marginal farmers who have 2 hectare land.
This scheme has been made effective on retrospective basis from December 1, 2018, he said, adding the amount will be given in three installments.
In this context, Mr Goyal sought to make a veiled attack on the ivory tower experts and political detractors and said such people could never appreciate the agony of the poor and landless farmers.
'It is only our Prime Minister Modi who understood the problems of this section of people,' he said.
'Prime Minister Narendra Modi has categorically instructed that this government will cater to the interest of the last man in the line,' he said, adding the decision to give Rs 6,000 per annum is historic.
This is a move to ensure that the farmers are henceforth respected in this country, the Finance Minister said.
Analysts say the BJP government had come under immense pressure to address the issue of farm distress specially after party's defeat in three Hindi heartland states as farm incomes have been ravaged by low crop prices and rising costs.(UNI)
