Mamata remembered Kalpana Chawla on anniversary of her tragic death

Kolkata, Feb 1 : West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee today remembered  Kalpana Chawla, Indian-American astronaut, on the anniversary of her tragic death.

“Remembering Kalpana Chawla, Indian-American astronaut, on the anniversary of her tragic death in a spaceship explosion,” Ms Banerjee posted on her social networking page. Kalpana was born on March 17, 1962, an American astronaut and the first woman of  Indian origin in space, was one of the seven crew members who died in the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster when the craft disintegrated during its re-entry into the Earth's atmosphere on February 1, 2003.

She was the first Indian-born woman and the second Indian person to fly in space after astronaut Rakesh Sharma. Kalpana was posthumously awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor. (UNI)
