In the wake of growing farmer unrest across the country, the Modi Government on Friday made a budget announcement of Rs 6,000 per year cash support to small and marginal farmers. This is expected to burden the next Government with Rs 75,000 crore annually and would benefit 12 crore farmers.
Minister Piyush Goyal who presented the budget in Parliament on Friday said that under the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Samman Nidhi, Rs 6,000 would be transferred to bank accounts of farmers holding up to 2 hectares. This would be in three equal instalments.
Goyal said Rs 20,000 crore had been provided for current fiscal and Rs 75,000 crore would be allocated for the next fiscal.
Opposition leaders said the paltry amount of Rs 6,000 a year would mean nothing taking into account the pathetic scene of farmers who have been facing severe crisis ranging from very low price for their produce to crop loss and debt burden.
