War of words b/w Cong & BJP on ‘leaked’ NSSO survey; Rahul says time for PM to go, BJP terms it ‘fake news’

New Delhi, Jan 31: There was a war of words on Thursday between the Congress and the BJP over a ‘leaked report’ of the National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO's) periodic labour force survey (PLFS), which said that unemployment rate in 2017-18 was at a 45 year old high, with Congress president Rahul Gandhi saying it was time for the Prime Minister to go while the BJP termed it as ‘fake news’.

According to the leaked National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO's) periodic labour force survey (PLFS), which was published by a national daily, the country's unemployment rate was at a 45-year-high of 6.1 per cent in 2017-18.

Attacking the Narendra Modi government on the ‘leaked survey’ by the NSSO, Congress president Rahul Gandhi said it was time for the Prime Minister to go.

In a post on social media, Mr Gandhi said,’’NoMo Jobs! The Fuhrer promised us 2 Cr jobs a year. 5 years later, his leaked job creation report card reveals a National Disaster. Unemployment is at its highest in 45 yrs. 6.5 Cr youth are jobless in 2017-18 alone. Time for NoMo2Go.’’

Mr Gandhi also posted on his twitter handle tagged a media report which cited an NSSO survey which said the unemployment rate is highest in 45 years.

Earlier, AICC media incharge Randeep Surjewala also alleged that the unemployment rate is at a 45-year high and said this was the reason why the National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report on jobs was withheld. This is why the members of National Statistical Commission resigned, he claimed.

In a series of tweets, he said,’’Modi ji, Unemployment rate is at a 45-year high. This is why the NSSO Report was kept under the wraps. This is why members of NSC resigned.‘’

"Promise of 2 crore jobs turned out to be a cruel joke. India does not want a Government that has left the future of our youth in jeopardy," Surjewala said on Twitter.

Reacting on the report, AICC spokesperson Abhishek Singhvi said, "If figs inconvenient, doctor them; if experts indep, make them lame duck & forced 2resign; if doctoring nt possible, change basis of calculation! Vive #bjp #Modi."

In another tweet, Congress leader Kapil Sibal said,’’Modiji don't torture Data! Release National Sample Survey Office's (NSSO's) periodic labour force survey (2017-2018). Jobless Rate (2017-2018) Amongst Youth : Rural Male : 17.4 per cent Rural Female : 13.6 per cent Urban Male: 18.7 per cent Urban Female : 27.2 per cent Result of Pakordanomics ?’’

Reacting to the ‘leaked survey’, AICC senior spokesperson Anand Sharma said the ‘completely failed’ government suppressed the report to hide its inefficiency.

Mr Sharma said that in just five years, Prime Minister Modi has devastated the economy and driven unemployment to 45 year high.

“The youth of India have one question for you Modiji, ‘how is the jobs?”, he said.

Sharma said that under Modi government, employment sector in the country is completely destroyed and there is no increase in employment.

Referring to the President Ram Nath Kovind’s speech in the joint sitting of the members of Parliament, Mr Sharma said that Modi government had promised to enroll 10 crore candidates in Kaushal Vikas Yojana.

However, “President's address today states that only 1 crore were enrolled. 90 percent of the work is still incomplete”, he said.

“NSSO Data revealed today clearly states that unemployment rate among rural male has increased from 5 percent to 17.4 percent after Demonetisation, and from 4.8 percent to 13.6 percent among rural female”, Mr Sharma said.

Quoting media reports, the Congress leader said that among urban males, unemployment rate increased from 8.1 percent to 18.7 percent and among urban females, it increased from 13.1 percent to 27.2 percent.

“There is no 100 smart city, there is no skill development, no employment is created, and poverty did not end” he said.

The BJP, however, termed the ‘leaked report’ as ‘fake news’.

In a counter attack at Congress President Rahul Gandhi, the BJP said totally jobless can peddle such 'Fake News'.

Attacking Mr Gandhi without naming him, the BJP on its official twitter handle said, 'It's clear that he has inherited Mussolini's shortsightedness and has myopic understanding of issues.

EPFO's real data shows sharp increase in jobs, created in just the last 15 months.

Only a man who hasn't ever held a proper job & is totally jobless can peddle such #FakeNews!'

According to the media reports based on leaked documents of NSSO survey, country’s unemployment rate was at a four decade high of 6.1 percent during 2017-18.

The reports claimed that the NSSO survey shows a surge in joblessness among youth in 2017-18.

According to the report, the country’s unemployment rate stood at a 45 year high of 6.1 per cent during 2017-18.

The report quotes the NSSO survey as saying that the unemployment rate in 2017-18 stood at its highest level since 1972-73- the period since when the jobs data is comparable.

The NSSO report says that the joblessness is higher in urban areas (7.8 per cent) than the rural parts (5.3 per cent) of the country. Also, more people were withdrawing from the workforce as the labour force participation rate stood at lower level than the previous few years.

It was the first annual household survey conducted by the NSSO between July 2017 and June 2018 on employment after Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced demonetisation on November 8, 2016.

The controversy erupted on Monday after two National Statistical Commission (NSC) members, including the acting chairman, resigned alleging that the government had withheld the release of NSSO report on employment.

NSC is the statutory body which releases the NSSO report. (UNI)
