New Delhi, Jan 30: Senior BJP leader and Union Minister Arun Jaitley on Wednesday made a veiled attack on socialist leaders and 'Lohiaites', saying most of them after BJP's emergence started "political business with Congress".
However, he pointed out that the late George Fernandes was an exception. "In the post Lohia era, with the emergence of the BJP as the principal pole of Indian politics, many Lohiaites shed their inhibition & started political business with Congress. The Left was not far behind. They called it re-polarisation. One honourable exception was George Fernandes," Mr Jaitley tweeted.
Mr Jaitley, who is abroad undergoing treatment, further wrote - "George Fernandes was the last of the veteran Lohiaites. Dr Ram Manohar Lohia, George Saheb’s mentor represented the anti-Nehru, anti-Congress face of Indian politics."
He also said - "After the 1962 General Elections and the China war debacle, Dr Lohia gave to this country the famous slogan “Congress hatao, desh bachao”. This led to an anti-Congress alliance."
Former Defence Minister Fernandes, who died on Tuesday, was jailed during Emergency and had stuck to his anti-Congress stance lifelong. (UNI)
