Patna, Jan 29 : Former defence minister George Fernandes who left an indelible mark on Indian politics has a great link with Bihar as he made the state his ‘karmbhoomi’ in his illustrious political career.
Mr Fernandes was elected to Lok Sabha from Muzaffarpur in north Bihar in 1977, 1980, 1989, 1991 and 2004 amply demonstrating his deep affection for Bihar.
Mr Fernandes had contested the LS election on Janata Party ticket in 1977 and emerged victorious by a margin of 3 lakh votes while he was in jail. He was put behind bars after his name had figured in explosion triggered through dynamite inside a public toilet near Halol in Baroda.
Senior BJP leader Sushama Swaraj (presently external affairs minister) was present in Muzaffarpur as an advocate at the time of filing of nomination paper by Mr Fernandes for Lok Sabha election.
