NDA govt working to mete out justice to victims of 1984 riots: PM

New Delhi, Jan 13 : Describing the 1984 Sikh riots as an ‘injustice’ to the Sikh community, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said following the path shown by Guru Nanak or Guru Gobind Singh of standing with justice, , the NDA government at the Centre is working to mete out justice to the victims of the 1984 riots.

Speaking after releasing a commemorative coin of Rs. 350 in the national capital to mark the birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh, the PM, referring to the 1984 Sikh riots , said ,'all the Sikh gurus, be it Guru Gobind Singh or Guru Nanak , has shown the path of standing with justice. Following the path shown by them, the present government is working to mete out justice to the victims."

"Law will now work to wipe the tears of the mothers, sisters, sons and daughters who have suffered for decades and justice will be meted out to them," PM said.

At a function, attended by former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and several union Ministers, organised at Prime Minister’s official residence, 7, Lok Kalyan Marg, Mr Modi said the Central government is going to build the Kartarpur corridor which will help the Sikh community to visit the Gurudwara Darbar Sahib.

“With the tireless efforts of the central government, the Kartarpur corridor is going to be built, now every Indian will be able to see the Gurudwara Darbar Sahib with their eyes rather than the telescope”, Prime Minister said.

“This is the repentance of the lapses in August 1947”, Mr Modi said in an apparent dig at the then congress leaders for not ensuring that Kartarpur corridor was included in India.

While praising the contribution to the society by the tenth Sikh Guru, the Prime Minister said the Guru Gobind Singh was a wonderful example of courage, patience, heroism and sacrifice.

Mr Modi said Guru Gobind Singh was not only a warrior but also a poet and added that “poetry of Guru Gobind Singhji is the inspiration of Indian culture and the simple expression of our life. Just as his personality was multi-faceted, his poetry is also contained in many different subjects”.

The Prime Minister said Guru Gobind Singh Ji , his values and teachings will continue to be the source of inspiration and the guiding spirit for the mankind in years to come. He added that the Commemorative Coin is a small effort on our part to show our respect and reverence to him. He urged the people to make a resolve to walk the talk on the 11-point path shown by Guru Gobind Singh ji Maharaj.

The Prime Minister greeted the nation on Lohri on this occasion.

The Prime Minister earlier urged the people of the country to follow the path of devotion and sacrifice for the nation along the lines of Guru Gobind Singh jee in his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat on December 30, 2018.

He attended the 350th birth anniversary celebrations of Guru Gobind Singh in Patna on January 5, 2017 and released a commemorative postage stamp to mark the occasion. (UNI)
