SC reinstates Verma as CBI director; big blow to Modi Govt

In a major blow to the Modi Government the Supreme Court has ordered reinstatement of exiled CBI director Alok Verma who was forced to go on leave.

On Verma's plea challenging his forced leave, the court set aside the Government order sending Verma on leave, following a feud between him and his deputy CBI special director Rakesh Asthana. The two had accused each other of corruption.

With Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi on leave, the verdict was read out by Justice SK Kaul. However, the CJI was involved in preparing the verdict.

A high-power committee would look into the corruption charges. Till then Verma would not be able to take important policy decision.

The court felt the investigation office had to be insulated.

Verma had contended that the Modi government had no authority to send him on forced leave. The Government claimed that the charges against him had to be investigated independently.
