High-power panel to probe graft charges against Verma

The Supreme Court has ruled for formation of a high-power select committee to look into the corruption charges levelled against CBI Director Alok Verma.

The team of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi and Leader of Opposition Ghulam Nabi Azad will decide on action, if any, against Verma.

The apex court ruled today as it reinstated him as the CBI director. However, he cannot take important policy decision during his term.

Verma was sent on leave by the Union Government after a feud between him and his deputy and CBI special director Rakesh Asthana. The two levelled corruption charges against each other and when the matter went public, the Government send Verma and Asthana on leave and appointed Nageswara Rao as interim chief.

Verma challenged his being forced to go on leave and contended that the Modi Government had not authority to send him on forced leave.
