New Delhi, Dec 11 : As the trends of counting for assembly elections showed the Congress taking a huge lead over the BJP in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh whi;le giving a tough fight to the saffron party in madhya Pradesh, party president Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday met his mother and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi at 10 Janpath here on Tuesday.
Sources said that during his meeting with Mrs Sonia Gandhi, Rahul discussed the results for five state assemblies even as the counting is still on.
The results of the assembly polls have come as a shot in the arm for the Congress president with it being the first win for the party wityh him being at the helm.
The buoyed Congress president was seen in the Lok Sabha along with Ms Gandhi in the morning where Prime Minister Narendra Modi was also present.
In Telangana, the TRS has taken a clear lead and the Congress could have done better without the alliance of regional outfits Telugu Desham Party (TDP), Telanganga Jana Samiti (TJS) and Communist Party of India (CPI).
In Mizoram polls, five-time Chief Minister and Congress stalwart Lal Thanhawla lost both the assembly seats he contested. Ironically, the set back to the Congress in Mizoram comes on a day when the grand old party, which has been experiencing a series of electoral defeats since 2014, made a strong come back in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh.
As soon as the latest counting trends indicating a Congress victory in Rajasthan and Chhattisagarh poured in, a wave of celebrations began at the Congress headquarters with a large number of party workers gathering outside the AICC office at 24 Akbar Road.
The party workers were seen raising slogans of '' Congress President Rahul Gandhi Zindabad''. Jubiliant party workers were seen greeting each other and were bursting crackers as mark of party's good show. (UNI)
