New Delhi, Dec 8 : The ongoing 160th session of the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) Council has approved India’s proposal to observe 2023 as the International Year of Millets, says an Agriculture Ministry press note.
In addition, the FAO Council also approved India’s membership to the Executive Board of the United Nations World Food Program (WFP) for 2020 and 2021.
Conveying his gratitude to the countries who gave support, Union Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Radha Mohan Singh said here on Friday that this will enhance global awareness to bring back nutri-cereals to the plate for food and nutrition security and help increase production.
The international nod comes in the backdrop of India celebrating 2018 as the National Year of Millets for promoting cultivation and consumption of nutri-cereals comprising jowar, bajra, ragi and minor millets.
State governments can procure millets through the Department of Food and Consumer Affairs at the minimum support price set by the Central government. (UNI)
