New Delhi, Dec 6 : Responding to the BJP charge that the Congress was working to help Christian Michel, the alleged middleman in Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal, the opposition party on Thursday charged the BJP of raking up the AgustaWestland deal to hide its 'panic' over its ‘certain defeat’ in the assembly polls to the five states.

The Congress alleged that the ruling party was itself ‘complicit’ in the AgustaWestland deal.

Talking to reporters here, AICC spokesperson Jaiveer Shergill said ' the BJP was raking up the AgustaWestland issue to hide it panic on its ‘certain defeat’ in the assembly polls in five states.'

‘’On December 11, the lotus of the BJP is set to wither and the Congress’ idea of development is set to blossom . The BJP is raking up the AgustaWestland issue to hide its panic ,’’he said.

Responding to the BJP charging the Congress of standing rock solid behind Michel, Mr Shergill said that the BJP itself was complicit in the AgustaWestland deal..

‘’For the past 4 years, BJP is creating a racket of Agusta case, despite not finding any evidence against the Congress party. BJP is linking a lawyer, who is expelled from Congress, to Agusta, while Finance Minister Arun Jaitley's daughter and son-in-law have taken money from Nirav Modi.

Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad was a lawyer of Sahara Subhroto Roy, who was involved in chit fund scam. Finance Minister Jaitley defended Ketan Parekh, involved in stock manipulation scam and also defended Union Carbide in Bhopal Gas tragedy,’’he said.

Alleging that the BJP was ‘complicit’ in the AgustaWestland deal, Mr Shergill said,’’the

BJP government is supporting Agusta cases which were fought in Italy. They did not appeal to the higher court in Italy, when lost twice.

The Congress punished those guilty in AgustaWestland while it was the BJP which benefited them by including them in the ‘Make In India’ list. The BJP is complicit in the AgustaWestland deal. Congress fights against the corrupt, whereas BJP fights for the corrupt.’’

He said that the CBI had not investigated the angle of BJP aggressively promoting Agusta in Finmeccanica, despite them being into the radar of suspicion .

‘’ Will the CBI investigate the BJP-Agusta nexus of qui pro quo of accomodating and including them in Make in India programme, welcome them to bid for navy helicopters by overruling the earlier government's judgement?,’’he asked.

Earlier, mounting an attack on the Congress, BJP said that 'the extended hand of the 10 Janpath was working to help Christian Michel', the alleged middleman in Rs 3,600-crore AgustaWestland VVIP chopper deal.

'Congress is standing rock solid behind Michel. This is a calculated move to see that Christian Michel is protected,' BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra said in a press conference at party headquarters here.

The Congress party is completely rattled after the extradition of Christian Michel, he said, adding that. 'They know the reason. They had sent their team to defend Christian Michel.'

'The family in Congress is getting sleepless nights,' he said.

Patra said that Michel, who was extradited from the UAE on Tuesday night, is being defended by three lawyers -- Aljo K Joseph, a Congress activist, Indian Youth Congress, Vishnu Shankar, son of Kerala leader Chittar Madhu and Sriram Prakat, a former NSUI leader-- All three have worked under big Congress lawyers like Salman Khurshid and Kapil Sibal.

'Congress has appointed its pointsmen to save Michel,' he said, adding that BJP wanted to save the country's money while the whole Congress party is trying to protect Michel.

Joseph was expelled on Wednesday night from the party as he did not consult the party and acted in his individual capacity. (UNI)
