Thane, Nov 7: Around 100 households in two villages of Murbad taluka of the district received a unique gift -- the much-needed solar lantern -- on eve of the festival of lights, which dispelled the darkness and brighten their houses.
This was possible due to the initiative taken by the city-based Viviana Mall, which distributed these lanterns to the inhabitants of Mohwadi and Paradhwadi villages, situated at the foothills of the Malshej Ghat, on Saturday last. Both the villages have approximately 40-45 houses each.
As most of the homes do not have doors and windows, they are vulnerable to snake and scorpion attacks in the dark. In such a case, solar lamp will be a great help to these villagers. Every villager from these villages was delighted on getting the solar lantern, even the children were not left out.
Among these children, a girl named Tanjua Ramesh Ugada of Mohwadi, aged two, whose birthday incidentally was on Saturday. Tanuja was the centre of attraction during the distribution function.
Marketing vice-president at Viviana Mall, Reema Pradhan, repeatedly hugged the birthday girl in pitched darkness and also gifted her bar of chocolate on the occasion.
Meanwhile, other children were given the stationery items which included school essentials.
Ms Pradhan said that the mall took up the task of distributing solar lantern as a social responsibility, and this was one area where they thought could be useful to the people. UNI
