Amritsar tragedy: Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety to conduct probe

New Delhi, Nov 3: MP from Amritsar Gurjeet Singh Aujla met Minister of Railways Piyush Goyal and has requested for an inquiry by Commissioner of Railway Safety in the Amritsar Dusshera train tragedy.

Mr Aujla met Mr Goyal and handed over a letter dated October 23 to him.

Ministry of Railways has considered this request and other facts, circumstances and legal provisions, according to an official statement here on Friday.

The tragedy that took place on Dussehra has raised concerns regarding safety of persons trespassing on railway tracks.

As per law, in such cases, it is not mandatory to conduct inquiry by Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety, but it is not impermissible either.

In past, CRS inquiry was conducted in an incident of run over of persons on railway tracks.

Though, prima facie, Railways does not appear to be responsible, issue of inquiry by an independent and technically competent authority not reporting to the public transporter was considered and a request was made to CCRS to conduct an inquiry in this matter.

Chief Commissioner of Railway Safety, Lucknow has ordered statutory inquiry into the tragedy. ( UNI)
