Landslide in Barghara village in Gajpati district claims 12 lives

Bhubaneswar, Oct 13: Odisha government today rushed a team including doctors to Barghara village under Gangabada panchayat in Raigada block of the Gajapati district after local media reported that 12 people were killed and three injured in a landslide yesterday following incessant rains.

Briefing newspersons here, Chief Secretary A P Padhi said a team comprising of the Gajapati District Superintendent of Police, Sub-Collector, doctors and other officials left for the spot this morning.

Mr Padhi said the landslide area located on the border of Srikakulam in Andhra Pradesh and Raigada Block in Gajapati district and was inaccessible. The team, he said would have to trek more than 17 kms by walk cutting the trees to reach the spot.

The Chief Secretary said the exact position regarding the casualty and the injured would be known only after the team reached the spot and submit its report.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who made an aerial survey of the flood situation in Gajapati, Ganjam and Rayagada district expressed his profound grief over the landslide incident.

The government, Mr Patnaik said is waiting for a report on the tragic mishap.Official sources said the Chief Minister is expected to announce a package for the flood affected people this evening.

According to local media report, as many as 12 people including five children were reportedly killed and four others went untraced in a landslide following heavy rains triggered by the cyclone Titli which hit the Odisha coast on October 11 morning.

The villagers said the people had taken shelter in a cave atop a hill in view of heavy rains when the landslide took place. Since the mishap site is in a remote area, the rescue team could not reach the spot yesterday. UNI
