Plane hits Tiruchi airport wall, lands safely in Mumbai

A Tiruchi-Dubai Air India Express Boeing hit the perimeter wall of the airport during takeoff in the early hours of Friday and flew for three hours and made an emergency landing in Mumbai safely. The plane was carrying 130 passengers and crew of six.

The accident happened when the plane, during takeoff at 1.20 a.m. overshot the runway and hit the wall but managed to gain height .It damaged the compound wall and antennas used in Instrumental Landing System.

On being alerted by control tower, "the pilot in command reported that the aircraft systems were operating normally," said Air India Express in a statement. Nevertheless, the plane was diverted to Mumbai where it landed at 5.30 a.m.

Officials in Mumbai found that the plane's body had tears, cracks and dents that were potentially very dangerous. Images showed serious damage to the belly. Broken parts of the plane's antenna were found on the ground at the Trichy airport, a official said.

The damaged plan was grounded and passengers were put on another flight to Dubai.
