INS decries arrest of Nakeeran editor, demands his release

New Delhi, Oct 10: Indian Newspaper Society (INS) on Wednesday flayed the arrest of Nakeeran magazine editor and publisher Nakeeran Gopal and described it as 'prima facie an abuse of the process of law'.

'The decision of the Tamil Nadu Government to invoke this section militates against the authority granted to it under law. Constitutional authorities must exercise restraint and respect the freedom of the Press,' stated INS President Jayant Mammen Mathew in a release.

Urging the President to intervene in the matter and rein in gubernatorial excesses, Mr Mathew termed the arrest under Section 124 of the IPC as 'totally unwarranted'.

The INS also demanded withdrawal of the case against Mr Gopal and his colleagues.

Gopal was arrested for purportedly publishing an article in Nakeeran magazine that the office of the Governor of Tamil Nadu found objectionable. (UNI)
