OED’s new list of words

Oxford English Dictionary updates its list of words four times a year. The latest list that has come out adds 1400 words in its update. Words like fam, idiocracy and nothingburger have found their way into the list.

Idiocracy refers to a society consisting of or governed by people characterised as idiots. In what seems reflective of modern day politics, the word is also defined as a government formed of people considered stupid, ignorant or idiotic.

Another standout addition was nothingburger which means a person or thing of no importance, value or substance, especially something which contrary to expectations, turns out to be insignificant or unremarkable.

Fam, short for family and close friends is in wide use in UK and on social media. Many words from politics and social media are in the list this time.
