New Delhi, Oct 4: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested an Income-Tax official and a private person in a case related to alleged bribery of Rs 10 lakh.
“Dharmsheel Agrawal, an Income Tax Inspector, working in the office of Joint Commissioner, Income Tax, Range-III, Lucknow (UP) and one Samrat Chandra were arrested in a bribery case of Rs 10 lakh,” the agency said here on Thursday.
The CBI said a case was registered under sections 7 and 7A of PC Act, 1988 (as amended in 2018) against the Income Tax Inspector on a complaint alleging that he had demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 25 lakh for releasing FDRs of around Rs seven crore of a Kolkata-based private company which was seized by Income Tax department during the inquiry/investigation of another connected firm.
The agency said it was also alleged that later, the accused agreed to accept Rs 10 lakh as first installment. The CBI laid a trap and caught the Income Tax Inspector and his accomplice while accepting Rs 10 lakh from the complainant.
The agency said that searches were conducted at the residential premises of the Income Tax Inspector which led to recovery of around Rs 10.50 lakh as well as documents relating to several bank accounts and investments along with other incriminating documents.(UNI)
