The Tamil Nadu government on Thursday issued a red alert for all districts for October 7 after the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted heavy rains in Tamil Nadu and Kerala over the next four days.
The weather department said heavy to heavy rains were expected in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry , Kerala and Lakshadweep between Oct 4 and 8. It also warned that sea would be rough to very rough over south and central Arabian Sea and advised fishermen not to venture out.
The met department also said "thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty winds very likely at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Kerala, coastal Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and interior Karnataka.
K Satyagopal, commissioner (revenue administration) for Tamil Nadu told reporters.that circulars had been issued to administation, particularly in southern districts to take precautionary measures and evacuate people living in low-lying areas. to relief camps which should be readied. He said advisories had also been issued to fishermen not to put to sea.
Revenue Minister RB Udhaya Kumar said the Government had sanctioned around Rs 100 crore to remove encroachments on the water path. "De-silting works are also being carried out across the State to prevent flooding and disaster management forces are also kept ready " he said.
