New Delhi, Sep 29: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday said education and innovation are important for development of a nation, and in fact, innovation is another vital element of education today.
Inaugurating the conference on Academic Leadership on Education for Resurgence at Vigyan Bhawan here, Modi said, 'Knowledge and education are not restricted to books. The purpose of education is a balanced development of every dimension of a person and this development is not possible without innovation. Swami Vivekananda stressed on wholesome education that makes us a 'human' and recalled Swami Vivekananda’s emphasis on self-reliance, character building, and human values, as elements of education.
Referring to ancient Indian texts, the Vedas, the Prime Minister said our ancient universities such as Taxila, Nalanda and Vikramshila gave importance to innovation, besides knowledge. 'In our ancient universities like Nalanda, Vikramshila and Taxila both knowledge and innovation were given equal importance,' he added.
'Innovation is very important because without it, life seems like a burden.' Vice-Chancellors/Directors from more than 350 universities are attending the conference organised jointly by UGC, AICTE, ICSSR, IGNCA, IGNOU, JNU and SGT University. Human Resource Development Minister Prakash Javadekar and his deputy Dr Satya Pal Singh were also present.
On the importance of thinking in terms of ‘global citizen’ or ‘global village’, he said Indian universities and colleges should be leveraged to find solutions to the challenges facing us. We should “Interlink Institutions to Innovate and Incubate”, he added.
He urged students to link their classroom learnings to the aspirations of the country and listed Atal Tinkering Labs which have been set up to encourage children to innovate and the steps taken for higher education and the RISE – Revitalisation of Infrastructure and Systems in Education -programme for improving education infrastructure.
