Agency News

Srinagar, Sep 27: Security forces burst teargas shells and resorted to lathicharge to disperse demonstrators protesting against the death of a youth in a shootout during Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in the downtown city early Thursday morning.

Immediately after 24-year-old youth Mohammad Saleem Malik was laid to rest at Eidgah martyrs grave yard in the downtown, the people, mostly youths, clashed with the security force who were deployed to maintain law and order.

Security forces resorted to lathicharge to disperse the demonstrators who were regrouping and pelting stones on security forces and police personnel. Later, security forces burst teargas shells when the demonstrators were trying to march towards main Nallahmar road.

The demonstrators, raising slogans, alleged that Malik was killed by security forces near his house at Qamarwari area without any provocation.

The situation was very tense as clashes were reported from other areas in the downtown.

Earlier, security forces had launched CASO in the Qamarwari area of the downtown following a tip-off about the presence of militants.

The authorities had suspended mobile internet service in Srinagar as a precautionary measure to prevent spread of rumours. (UNI)
