PM Modi and Cochin Airport win Champions of the Earth Award from UN

PM Modi on Thursday dedicated the Champions of the Earth Award given to him by the UN to the people of this country. This is the UN’s highest environmental award that has been bestowed upon him. He won it along with Cochin airport in a different category. The Champions of the Earth awards were announced on Sept 26.

Modi said that the struggle with Nature had caused destruction to Man and Nature. He was given this award for his leadership of the International Solar Alliance and pledge to eliminate single use plastic in India by 2022.

CIAL was also honoured with this award in the category of Entrepreneurial Vision for its leadership in the use of sustainable energy, along with four other environmental change makers.

The Champions of the Earth Award was started in 2005 and recognizes exemplary individuals and organizations. It is the UN’s highest honour and celebrates outstanding figures from the public and private sectors and from civil society whose actions have had a transformative positive impact on the environment.

The awards were presented during the Earth Gala in New York City hosted by actor and environment activist Alec Baldwin and Un Goodwill Ambassador Dia MIrza.
