Imphal, Sep 26: Congress President, Rahul Gandhi has decided to promote fishery in all the north eastern states.
Ningombam Bupenda Meitei, who has been appointed as Regional Coordinator for eight North Eastern states for All India Fishermen Congress under All India Congress Committee by Congress President Rahul Gandhi, said the Congress President has decided to help the fishers of the entire region.
Bhupenda said to implement the vision that he would be touring and interacting with all the fishermen of the region to understand their problems. He said he will be meeting all Congress Presidents of AIFC (All India Fishermen Congress). The fishing community in the region needs lots of support, logistic and financial he added. He added the mission is to carry forward the vision of Rahul Gandhi in promoting fisheries and fishermen of the nation in the region. He said he will also seek advice and suggestions from former Congress Chief Ministers and Pradesh Congress Committee Presidents of the region.
Bupenda Meitei said, "I am happy to be a part of Congress President's vision of having a separate Union Fisheries Ministry, once Congress comes back to power. Promotion of Fisheries science and research, inland fish production, cold storage fishery, protection of fisherman's livelihood and rights, management of fish ponds, exporting our fishes, self sufficiency of fish production in the North East India and inclusion of fishermen in the decision making of Fisheries development in India must be some of our targets. I want our fishing community to be a part of our nation's building with honour and dignity. A Comprehensive Fishing Policy of our country is the need of the hour."
Ningombam Bupenda Meitei who is also the Chairperson, Social Media and Spokesperson of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee said fishermen need to be made aware of the rising demands and they should be helped to protect their own market by increasing quality products.
All the north eastern states have lots of water bodies and fishing is a natural trade of the people. By giving some support and training, fishery can become a major industry. The variety available in the region is also amazing and there is also need for assistance in storing, processing and marketing the fishery products he added. To take up the task it is important to open a different ministry and frame fishing policy by involving all the fishers of the entire region. The presence of different water bodies and different terrain will help in expanding the scope and needs complete evaluation and implementation of programmes he added. UNI
