New Delhi, Sep 8: Amid report that the Tamil Nadu government is preparing a resolution to recommend the release of seven people convicted in Rajiv Gandhi murder case, senior BJP leader Subramanian Swamy on Saturday made his displeasure public through a tweet and said Rajiv Gandhi was killed for working in national interest as Prime Minister.
Referring to UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi and her children Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, without mentioning their names, Swamy asked how they could forgive the former Prime Minister’s assassins.
“What should the nation think of a wife and two children who forgive killers who join with anti Indian foreign terrorist organisation to brutally blow up Rajiv Gandhi and kill him in cold blood merely for following national interests as Prime Minister?”, Swamy tweeted.
Earlier the Supreme Court asked the Tamil Nadu government to take a decision on the release of five convicts- Murugan, Santhan, Ravichandran, Robert Piyus and Jayakumar as it said “the convicts, could be released by the state on its discretion by sending its recommendation to Governor Purohit."
The state government is also considering the release of two other convicts Nalini and Perarivalan, as the latter’s mercy petition is pending before the Tamil Nadu Governor for last two years.
As the Union government told the Supreme Court in August that the Union Home Ministry had rejected Tamil Nadu government’s proposal to release the convicts, the Apex court told Tamil Nadu government to take a decision. Former chief minister J Jayalalithaa had moved the resolution to release the seven convicts. However the Union government had opposed the move.
After the Apex court ruling, it is stated that the EK Palaniswamy government was preparing the ground to release the convicts. The opposition DMK too is supporting the government move to release them. UNI
