CPI(M) flays Indo-US COMCASA pact

New Delhi, Sep 8: The Communist Party of India -Marxist (CPI-M) on Friday flayed the signing of the Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement (COMCASA) and said such pact will compromise India’s defence communications network and "bind India" to buying US defence equipment in the future.

"The signing of the Communications, Compatibility, Security Agreement (COMCASA) illustrates the way the United States is getting the Modi government to intertwine the Indian armed forces with the Pentagon," the CPI-M polit bureau said a day after India and the United States inked the COMCASA seeking to deepen the defence partnership.

"The communications equipment which will be provided to India to place in defence platforms will be monitored by the US. It will compromise India’s defence communications network and bind India to buying the US defence equipment in the future," the polit bureau said in a statement here.

"The first two-plus-two meeting between the foreign and defence ministers of India and the United States represents the institutionalization of the strategic alliance with the US," it said.

The Modi government has entered into this second agreement after the signing of the Logistics Support Agreement in 2016 which will allow US air and naval forces to utilize Indian facilities, the CPI-M said.

"The military and strategic alliance with the United States is going to harm India’s strategic autonomy and independent foreign policy decision making," it said.

The CPI-M demanded that the Modi government must cease such military agreements and "stop the bartering of India’s national sovereignty". UNI
