New Delhi, Aug 30: Human right activists, intellectuals, students belonging to various groups on Thursday, protested in the national capital against the arrest of five activists, accusing them of playing a role in the Bhima-Koregaon violence in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra police arrested five activists – Arun Ferreira, Sudha Bharadwaj, Varavara Rao, Gautam Navlakha and Vernon Gonsalves on Tuesday. However the Supreme Court intervened in the matter and directed the Maharashtra police to confine the activists in their own home till September 6, by saying "dissent is the safety valve of democracy. If not allowed, the safety valve will burst.”

In a press conference, author Arundhati Roy, Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani, lawyer Prashant Bhushan, social activists Aruna Roy, Bezwada Wilson condemned the police action and demanded immediate and unconditional withdrawal of FIR against activists. (UNI)
