We have an undeclared emergency now, says Azad

All India Congress Committee general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad on Thursday said former Chief Minister M Karunanidhi fought emergency which Indira Gandhi later regretted and apologised for because “he was a true democrat”.

Azad said “the situation is worse now with every democratic institution being undermined”. He said “as the BJP does not have majority in the Rajya Sabha, it is introducing all bills as money bills”, thus undermining Parliament.

Admitting that DMK was part of the BJP government of Vajpayee, Azad said” Karunanidhi never compromised his ideologies”. it was a support more to Vajpayee than to BJP.

He also said DMK was also part of the UPA Government for ten years. He said “Sonia Gandhi looked upon of Karunanidhi as a father figure”.

Azad also recalled that Karunanidhi was the first to get a resolution Assembly on State autonomy and said federalism was now under threat thanks to centralisation of power by the present regime.

Azad said Karunandihi was the first in the country to provide for reservation for backward Muslims, much before Kerala and Karnataka took similar measures. UNI
