New Delhi, Aug 28: In a direct attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi on the alleged irregularities in the deal for Rafale fighter jets, the Congress on Tuesday alleged that it was a deal between the PM and industrialist Anil Ambani that Modi had bypassed established procedures for defence procurement just to benefit him.
Talking to reporters here, AICC spokesperson Jaipal Reddy said, 'The defence procurement procedures by bypassed in signing of this deal and the Defence Minister and the cabinet committee for security were not taken into confidence whereas Anil Ambani had prior information about the deal.'
'I am calling it a direct deal between the PM and Ambani because the Foreign secretary had made a statement that there is no link between the Prime Minister and the French President on the deal. Secondly, when the deal was signed, the Defence Minister was not present.
Also, Anil Ambani, whose company received the deal for the Rafale fighter jets, got his company registered just 12 days before the signing of the deal. The deal was given to the company which did not have any prior experience in defence production,' Reddy said.
Reddy said that the then Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar has said in a statement that a deal had been signed between the Prime Minister and the French government. 'This is the first instance of the Defence Minister patting the Prime Minister for the deal when according to established tradition, it is the PM who pats the Defence Minister for signing the deal,' Reddy said.
Accusing the PM of operating in a dictatorial manner, Reddy said that he has reduced important leaders like Murli Manohar Joshi to a position of insignificance and has given a place of prominence to people like Nirmala Sitharaman by promoting them. In this manner, he has sidelined all the leaders with capability.'
He said the PM was behaving like a 'medieval monarch' and sought to compare him with the 17th century french monarch Louis IV. 'He behaves like a person who thinks that 'I am the state' and 'I am the world'. For Mr Modi, Democratic posts and institutions do not hold any importance,' he said.
Responding to a question on Anil Ambani sending notices to Congress leaders for their remarks on the Rafale deal, Reddy said,'Our leaders are not afraid of legal notices. In a way it is good that Anil Ambani has send notices. UNI
