Lok Sabha nod to Bill allowing overseas voters exercise franchise

New Delhi, Aug 9: The Lok Sabha passed The Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill that would enable overseas voters or Non Resident Indians to cast their vote in person or by proxy in the constituency where the poll is taken.

Piloting the Bill, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said passing the Bill marks an momentous occasion for the over seas votes. He said the demand for NRIs to vote has been a genuine issue.

"I am proud to say that all NRIs have reached abroad due to their hard work," he said and hence it is legitimate to say that they have right to vote. In this context, he said the word 'proxy' need not be considered a dirty word.
