Harivansh Narayan Singh elected Dy chairman

Harivansh Narayan Singh, the NDA nominee, has been elected as the Deputy chairman of Rajya Sabha on Thursday.

He defeated the joint opposition candidate BK Hariprasad. In the voting held on Thursday 125 members voted for Singh and 105 members for Hariprasad.

The NDA-backed Harivansh is of the Janata Dal(United). The Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) is an alliance partner of the NDA at the Centre and in Bihar where it is leading the coalition. . The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) with nine MPs supported the NDA candidate. According to reports Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bihar CM Nitish Kumar requested Orissa chief minister Naveen Patnaik, who is also BJD chief on phone to support NDA candidate,Harivansh Narayan Singh

As some parties abstained from voting, the effective strength of 244 came down. The seat fell vacant with the retirement of PJ Kurien of the Congress on June 1.
