Sitharaman to accompany PM to pay last respect to Karunanidhi in Chennai

New Delhi, Aug 7: Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will accompany Prime Minister Narendra Modi to pay last respect to veteran leader M Karunanidhi in Chennai on Wednesday.

“The Raksha Mantri will accompany the prime minister to Chennai for paying tribute to the deceased leader,” the defence spokesperson told UNI.

Kalaignar Karunanidhi stood for regional aspirations as well as national progress. He was steadfastly committed to the welfare of Tamils and ensured that Tamil Nadu’s voice was effectively heard," Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted.

Due to long ailment Karunanidhi has been in and out of hospital for more than a year. He lived a secluded life -- making no public appearance. He died on Tuesday at Kauvery Hospital after spending 11 days in ICU. His body is taken to his town in Gopalapuram and his mortal remains will be laid to rest on Wednesday. UNI
