Prime Minister Narendra Modi is flying to Chennai on Wednesday morning to pay homage to DMK patriarch and five Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M Karunanidhi who died in Kauvery Hospital on Tuesday evening.
Modi will be visiting Rajaji Hall at 10 a.m. and pay his respects to Karunanidhi who will lie in State there. The funeral is set for four in the evening.
As Modi is coming early in the day, he is unlikely to stay for the funeral. He attended AIADMK leader and former Chief Minister J Jayalalitha’s funeral rites and stayed till her body was interred at the Anna Memorial at six in the evening on Dec 6, 2006.
The Centre has announced a one-day national mourning and said national flags would fly a half mast at all government offices.
The announcement of a national mourning is a tribute to the stature of Karunanidhi who started as a regional leader and emerged as a legendary national figure over a period of eight decades.
