Deoria shelter case: SP, Cong, AITC walk out in LS

New Delhi, Aug 7: Opposition members, including from the Samajwadi Party, Congress, JD(U) and Trinamool Congress on Tuesday raised the issue of alleged sexual abuse in women's shelter home in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria district and staged a walkout in the Lok Sabha.

Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh in his intervention said a high-level probe will be held and the guilty will be punished. He said what happened in the Women's Shelter home was painful and a matter of shame.

Uttar Ptradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath held a meeting of officials immediately to take stock of the matter and has suspended the District Magistrate and District Probation Officer of Deoria, Mr Singh said.

The Home Minister said officials on the level of Additional Chief Secretary and Additional Director General of Police will probe the matter and no culprits will be spared. Singh said an advisory will be sent to states so that such incidents are not repeated. There have been reports of allegations of sexual and physical abuse being committed in a women's shelter in Uttar Pradesh's Deoria. A number of girls have been missing and the couple who ran the shelter have been arrested.

The matter came to light when a 10-year-old girl escaped from the shelter and told the police about her ordeal and that of girls between the ages of 15 and 18, who she were allegedly being forced to engage in sexual activities and work as servants by the couple.Speaker Sumitra Mahajan said everybody was worried when such shameful incident takes place.

She said everybody should remain alert and attentive about what is happening in such places. SP member Dharmendra Yadav said he does not want to politics in the matter but accused that the UP government has become 'deaf and dumb'. He alleged that girls were sent to Gorakhpur and demanded that culprits be punished and all such homes be checked.

Jay Prakash Narayan Yadav, JD (U) alleged government hand in protecting the guilty.Congress floor leader Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that a Parliamentary Committee be constituted which can visit the states and conduct inquiry in such sensitive cases. Member from Deoria Kalraj Mishra said immediate action was taken in the matter and licence of the shelter home was cancelled last year but despite that it was being run illegally.

TDP members also trooped in the Well with their demand on Andhra Pradesh and later returned to their places. (UNI)
