New Delhi, Aug 6: Journalist-turned-politician Harivansh of the Janata Dal (United) is likely to be BJP-led National Democratic Alliance's candidate for the post of the Deputy Chairman in the Rajya Sabha, sources told UNI.
This is his first term in the upper house. The seat fell vacant with the retirement of PJ Kurien of the Congress on June 1. The Nitish Kumar-led Janata Dal (United) is an alliance partner of the BJP at the Centre and in Bihar where it is in power.
On Monday morning, Rajya Sabha Chairman M. Venkaiah Naidu announced that elections to the post of the Deputy Chairman would take place on August 9. Leader of Opposition and Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad has called a meeting of non-NDA Opposition leaders in the evening to discuss the issue and consider possible choices.
The NDA is in a minority in the upper house and would prefer to have a consensus candidate. However, speaking to media persons Mr Azad said that ideally the Deputy Chairman should be from an opposition party.
Earlier the name of BJP alliance partner Shiromani Akali Dal’s Naresh Gujral was doing the rounds. UNI
