Alleging that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is politicising the issue of National Register of Citizens (NRC), the Congress party on Sunday said that the people of the country and Assam are being cheated.

Talking to media persons here, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera alleged that the Narendra Modi government had tried to stop the NRC process in the Supreme Court and now the BJP leaders are fiercely polarising the state based on the issue.

He also said that on November 30, 2017, the Attorney General had even cited violence to prevent NRC, which the Court refused to accept.

“On one side, Modi government has been working on the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill 2016, which is being made to provide citizenship to all foreigners living in India till December 31, 2014, while they are moving ahead with the NRC on the other. The government should clarify its position”, said Mr Khera.

The Congress leader said that Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal should resign immediately from the post because he has confused the people of Assam on the issue of the NRC.

“BJP government is politicising the NRC issue and misleading the people of the country” Mr. Khera said and added that the United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government had sent out 82,000 Bangladeshi nationals, but the so-called ‘nationalist’ government of Mr Modi brought back 1822 of them.

Responding to a question regarding changing the name of Mughal Sarai Railway Station to Deen Dayal Upadhyay, Mr Khera said that the Modi government is only working to change the names.

“The government has changed the names of all the policies of the Congress governments”, he said and added that the Modi government should work to change the fate of farmers and future of youth. (UNI)
