Friendship day is celebrated on the first Sunday in the month of August and so it is on August 5 this year. It is a day dedicated to honour friends as with this generation, friends are family. It is commonly celebrated by exchanging colourful bands, flowers, chocolates, etc.
In India as in Bangladesh, Nepal and many South American countries the day witnesses colourful celebrations, dining out, fun and laughter. The origin of the day’s celebration is credited to Paraguay way back in 1958. Its popularity made Kofi Annan’s wife Nane Annan declared Winnie the Pooh as the Global Ambassador of Friendship at the UN in 1998.
