Centre clears Justice Joseph’s elevation

The Union government has, it is learnt, approved the appointment of Justice K M Joseph as the judge of Supreme Court of India. Accepting the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium to elevate Uttarakhand Chief Justice Joseph to the apex court has finally ended the major differences between the executive and the judiciary.

It is also learnt that the Centre has accepted the recommendations of the Collegium to the elevation of Madras High Court CJ Indira Bannerjee and Orissa High Court CJ Vineet Saran as Supreme Court judges.

Jutice Joseph’s elevation was recommended by the Collegium headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra on January 10. On April 30 the Centre had returned recommendation objecting Justice Joseph’s name on the ground of lack of seniority. His name was again recommended by the Collegium . The issue had created sharp differences within the top judiciary too in the last few months.
