AITC lawmakers returned to Kolkata

After being detained at Kumbhigram airport in Silchar in southern Assam since Thursday afternoon, six Trinamool Congress lawmakers were sent back to Kolkata by a morning flight on Friday.

Remaining two out of the total eight member delegation of AITC lawmakers will be flown out to New Delhi in the afternoon, official sources said here. Six members of the team returned to Kolkata by an Air India flight, at around 7.55 am.

The other two members will fly to New Delhi by 2.30 pm on Friday afternoon. The delegation, comprising a West Bengal Cabinet Minister, six MPs and one MLA, had arrived at Kumbhigram airport on Thursday afternoon for an on-ground assessment of the situation in Assam, post-NRC final draft publication.

The Assam Police had advised the delegation against the visit, in view of prohibitory orders in Silchar and other parts of the state. As they defied the police request, the delegation was kept detained inside the airport since Thursday afternoon and sent back on Friday.

The final draft of the updated National Register of Citizens for Assam was published on July 30, where names of 40 lakh applicants were excluded, who will be given opportunity to file claims and objections. (UNI)
