The Supreme Court on Friday issued notices to the Central government on its decision to monitor the social media content at the district level.
A three judge bench, headed by Chief Justice Dipak Misra and comprising Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud, also sought reply from the Union of India within two weeks.
Trinamool Congress MLA Mahua Moitra had filed a petition, challenging the Union Government's decision to monitor social media content at district levels.
The apex court also asked the Attorney General to assist the court in the matter and agreed to examine the report filed by the Central government to set up a 'Social Media Communication Hub'.
The bench observed during the hearing, "Tracking and regulating social media contents will transform us into a surveillance state." (UNI)
