The Supreme Court on Monday asked the Gujarat government to respond within six weeks to the plea of 2002 Gujarat gangrape victim, Bilkis Bano, who had sought enhanced compensation.
The bench was headed by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra and also comprised Justices A M Khanwilkar and D Y Chandrachud. It heard submissions by the lawyer of Bano and from the Gujarat and Centre.
The Gujarat government sought six more weeks time to reply to the notice in enhancement of compensation to Bano. Bano had sought exemplary enhancement of compensation from Gujarat government in the gangrape case.
She had also alleged systematic wrong doing by the Gujarat government to deny her justice in the case.
Bano had alleged that there were deliberate multiple failures by the state. She was allegedly gangraped and three of her family members said to be murdered by mobs during the 2002 communal riots in Gujarat.
